The Tilbury LNG facility is located on an international shipping route, allowing LNG to be efficiently shipped to East Asia and along the west coast of America either by ISO container or bulk carrier. It is also an efficient and cost effective fuel supply for local, coastal, and international ship fleets.
Tilbury is one of Canada’s first LNG facilities and has been operating safely since 1971 as a peak shaving facility to meet winter demand for FortisBC’s 1.2 million customers. An expansion of the facility went into service in 2018 to supply LNG for truck fuelling, truck-to-ship marine bunkering and ISO container exports.

In late 2018, FortisBC Energy Inc. started its first 0.25 MTPA liquefaction and 46,000m3 storage expansion, providing enhanced capacity to serve growing demand from marine customers and customers overseas. FortisBC is currently in early planning to complete Phase 1 by adding up to 0.65 MTPA of additional liquefaction capacity, which could be in service as early as 2025.
The Tilbury Jetty Limited Partnership, to be jointly owned by Fortis LNG Jetty Limited Partnership and Seaspan, has an application for an environmental assessment certificate with the Environmental Assessment Office of BC for a marine jetty next to the Tilbury LNG facility. This jetty would facilitate the supply of LNG for ship-to-ship LNG bunkering and for bulk delivery to overseas markets. The project is now in an application review phase. A Detailed Project Description for a further phase of expansion has been submitted to the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office and the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada. The Tilbury Phase 2 LNG Expansion project contemplates up to a 142,400 cubic metre new tank and new liquefaction capacity of 2.5 million tonnes per year. If approved, construction could begin as early as 2023 and be complete by 2028.
